Comparing Premium WordPress Theme Clubs

Many WordPress theme sellers give you the option of buying themes individually or joining their club. Membership plans give you access to all of their current and future themes (plus support resources) while you are member. Some theme clubs are small, some are large and some focus on a certain niche while others provide a variety of themes. Some theme clubs release a new theme every two months and some release two themes every month. Is it worth it to join a theme club when you can buy themes individually? The answer is sometimes.

First of all, the point of joining a theme club is to save money. And it’s only worth joining a club if they provide the kinds of themes that you will actually use. I wrote an article for Smashing Magazine titled Detailed Comparison of Premium WordPress Theme Clubs that provides information on this topic. I researched 11 popular theme clubs that meet a certain criteria (GPL-licensed, PSD’s included, etc.) in order to produce a comparison table and several charts along with my thoughts on each club. I hope you find it to be useful.

Hi Stephen, thanks for including UpThemes in the list. One thing I just wanted to make you aware of though is the pricing listed for UpThemes on the Smashing Mag article is outdated. We changed our pricing model a few weeks ago and it is $69 for a 6-month theme club membership to standard themes and $99 for a 6-month subscription to developer themes. I know you probably did the research a while ago, so I understand but it would be good to share this updated pricing with the users on Smashing Mag so as to not confuse anyone. Thanks again for including us!

It was my pleasure to mention UpThemes. Thank you for letting me know about the pricing change. I’ve updated it on ThemeSorter. I may update the Smashing article at some point to reflect updated theme counts, pricing, etc. (things sure change fast).
